I2SN - Innovation in Integrated
Security and Sustainability

The I2SN research network strengthens collaboration between science and research in order to advance pioneering technologies for integrated security and sustainability. By combining the future-oriented fields of materials, energy, critical supply infrastructures and cyber/IT, I2SN creates a multidisciplinary platform in the Free State of Saxony and connects leading scientific stakeholders.

Fields of Expertise

The challenges of integrated security and sustainable development require interdisciplinary solutions that link technological, organisational and societal perspectives. The I2SN research network brings together scientific excellence from several fields of expertise to develop resilient, pioneering and responsible security solutions. The focus is on three closely interconnected thematic areas:

Materials (IFW)

The focus of the Materials field of expertise is on innovative material and system solutions for personal and vehicle protection, as well as for trusted electronics, with the aim of sustainably establishing secure and resilient value chains.

Focus on resilient energy supply. Research into decentralised systems, innovative energy storage technologies and measures to safeguard critical supply infrastructures.

The Cyber/IT field of expertise is led by Fraunhofer FKIE. Research and innovation focus on topics relating to comprehensive national defence and resilience, including cybersecurity and cyber defence, as well as Software Defined Defence.
